On Friday, the AFL will unveil a new national anthem song on Sunday night, a tune featuring Australian musicians Ben Goldacre and Tim Hecker. On Saturday, the AFL is expected to honour some of its greatest players at a tribute game between West Coast and Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium in Perth.

„I remember the team anthem played last year and that was very much a celebration of our players. I really like seeing our guys in their colours. I’m sure we all enjoy the grand final. The flag has always been a big deal to us. I think it’s great that the AFL is allowing players to represent Australia at the highest level and I’m sure a lot of Australians want to see them at a finals event.“

I think it’s great that the AFL is supporting the national anthem with that song because I’m sure it’ll inspire more Australians to join in.“
The AFL announced the announcement of the national anthem match to mark its centenary this week. There have been 22 national teams since the start of the original Melbourne Cup competition in 1908.
„Since 1906, the AFL has played out an all-encompassing celebration of our national colours in order to acknowledge our past – the people that make our country a great place to live and work, and where we all grew up,“ said league commissioner Gillon McLachlan.
„There were five different national teams in the Melbourne Cup, and it is great to be able to relive this great rivalry between our two great clubs to the end of the grand final and, for me, my favourite moment in the grand final was when Michael Jordan threw the first ever flag for our national anthem. That song is iconic.“
